Watch The Karate Kid Description

(from imdb.com)

Last night, I attended a preview of “The Karate Kid” Remake, and I thought your readers might interested in hearing about it.

First, I went in with pretty low expectations. After this latest round of craptacular “remakes” or “reimaginings,” I was pretty much expecting the worst. However, I came away both pleased and surprised at the quality of the film; they not only created a worthy successor to the previous incarnation, but also created a proper film in its own right.

As to the plot of the movie, it is point for point the same as the Ralph Macchio original, so no surprises there. However changing the locale for the big move truly enhanced both the “menace” and the “fish out of water” dimension of the story. Locating the film in China meant that Dre (Jaden Smith) literally had no foothold in the world around him. As much as I was supposed to care about Daniel in the original, I had a hard time sympathizing with his plight. Being moved halfway around the world clarified the emotional content of this movie. And the film had a very broad emotional spectrum: it was equal parts funny, charming, scary, and triumphant. I found myself tearing up several times in the film because the predicaments felt very real as opposed to the original which seemed contrived.

The acting across the board is excellent. Taraji P. Henson shines when she is on screen, but she was underutilized. The Chinese actors are all excellent. The young actor who plays Dre’s nemesis is much more convincing as the thug/bully than in the original as is the head of the rival Kung Fu school. He’s not just a douchebag; he is a real menance, with a Yakuza vibe to him. When he threatens to bring pain and suffering, you know he is not kidding. But the two clear stars are Chan and Smith. Say what you will about Jackie Chan’s acting ability, but in this project he showed real depth. As Mr. Han, we see the years both as a martial artist and as a actor come together. I suspect part of the strength of this acting job was being able to act in his native language – he just seemed more comfortable. As for the young Mr. Smith, he is clearly channeling his dad’s early career which is fine for a tween actor. What the future holds is a valid question but for now, this level of charm and self-confidence makes Smith incredibly watchable.

Using China as the backdrop was simply a stroke of genius. The film could be seen as a travelogue for China and its culture. The cinematography is beautiful and evocative. While we can’t read the signs, the filmmakers make sure to create a “neighborhood” and a recognizable home base for the story. There is a very clear message about how both the US and China need each other but it is never really rammed down people’s throat. Many times we are treated to the food, the entertainment centers, the atmosphere of Beijing and the surrounding country as well. The martial arts are beautifully executed. As a student of Kung Fu San Soo, both the description of the mindset behind Kung Fu and the execution of the art are spot on. Chan is still the master of cinema martial arts, but every actor in the film shows great ability. In the final scene of the movie, there is a moment when Dre’s attackers salute Mr. Han, and I got this scene of Chan handing the torch on to this next generation. The credits mention a CG director but I would be hard pressed to tell you where it came in.

The weaknesses of this film are few. Some might have some qualms about the ages of the characters. In this film, the age group is stepped down to middle school, right around 12 years old. For me, this reduction in age added a charming innocent but also ramped up the impact of the violence. Just as seeing “Hit Girl” in “Kick Ass”, you get that weird disturbing experience of seeing a child who could seriously harm the adult. For me, that made the film all the more plausible and emotionally resonant. Others might have qualms about the cross culture aspect of the film, making the same complaint against it that was made against “Avatar”. From early in the film, you get this sense that the only change Dre will have to make is going from not knowing Kung Fu to knowing Kung Fu. In other words, the film comes off as though the US is culturally superior. But, while the character arc for Dre could have been more developed on this front, viewers will be pleased with how Dre begins to see the value of Chinese culture, especially in regards to respecting family. Lastly, my only head scratching moment was why did the film makers feel the need to keep the original title? This film I think would have worked well without reference to the original but because it is so dependent on the original for plotting and structure, perhaps the filmmakers felt the tip of the hat necessary. My only complaint is that the fighting style is not Karate which originates in Japan but rather Kung Fu, a Chinese martial art.

Final point: This is the first film I have seen that is truly a reimagining of the original. And it is so worth your time.

Watch The A Team Description

(from imdb.com)

I want to share with you all My dissapointment and anger over The A-team Movie’s PG-13 Rating. I was very much hoping that There would FINALLy be a very DARK, INTENSE Heavily Dramatic upsacle Version of The A-Taem Tellivision Show. So that The Adult Demographic would fanally have a Summer Movie of it’s OWN. I cannt tell You all Here how FED up and Jayed off at TPTB at Hollywood only continueing to cater to a placate Spnosors and Advertisers by having everything that is created in either Book/Novel format or Tellivison format to only appeal and be forced to be dumbed down to lwest common denominator so as to only care about and be concerned about Fans who only occuppy 3 Age-Group Demographics:
1. The 12-16 Year Old Demographic
2. The 16-35 Year Old Demographic
3, The 18-50 Year Old Demographic
There was not much They cut from taken to achieve a PG-13 Rating so as to make so that the largest Audeince possible could go to SEE it. I wonder how much of The A-Team Movie was ‘Sliced and Diced” to achive the PG-13 rating? I ca pretty much guarantee you it was a lot. It would have been very BOLD and COURAGEOUS plus very INSPIRED on Hallywood’s part to hav The A-Team Movie be a Rated R Movie so as to say to Us long suffering ADULT Fans, here is something for You for a change. But NO. Everything for Children and Kids as usual. Perhaps liam neeson’s next Movie the Unknown White Male due out in January7th 2011 will be the ONE that will Give not only Me what I have always wanted for Years, but other ADULT Fans who have felt left out and behind by Hollywood’s sick obsession with Youth. It ain’t all that and a bag of chips You know.
A movie like The a-team with Millitary types Who are covert black Ops types SHOULD be a R-Rated Movie. Special forces types are not nice and innocent types. they are very hard-core and brutal. carrying out Misions while on toaurs of suty that would make the hairs on the backs of Your necks stand up. They take down and take out some very nasty and evil individuals.
I know a R rating would have cut down Audience numbers, but it would have paid dividends oin the long run. They would have started to REGAIN the Adult Demo. Worth the sacrifice of the Young Demos. once in a while.

Watch Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Description

(from imdb.com)

Tonight I was fortunate enough to see an advanced screening of this film. Like many, I became a fan of this franchise with the Sands of Time trilogy, and I was very excited when I learned that there were plans to make a feature film based on it. The storyline of the game is very cinematic (at least in the aforementioned trilogy, not necessarily in the previous games in the series) so I felt that at film adaptation would be an impressive epic.

Having finally seen this movie, I can say that I was not at all disappointed!

One of the main strengths going into this movie was it’s involvement of the series creator Jordan Mechner. He crafted a very engaging screen story that pushed beyond the controller, creating an entirely new addition to the mythos. I know that at times including the creator can sometimes stifle the process, as many will fight changes to the source material that may need to be altered to work better with a director’s vision; but I feel that Mechner’s involvement showed his desire to see his brain-child develop into a success on the big screen.

In addition to involving Mechner, the other big strength was the way that the filmmakers chose to handle the story. Let’s face it, movies based on video games have a very poor track record. Super Mario Brothers, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider… all of them made for films that were mediocre at best, and downright abysmal at worst. Prince of Persia had a mighty big hurdle to clear with this, and they found the perfect team to tackle it. Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney already accomplished a similar feat when they brought Pirates of the Caribbean to the big screen (a movie based on a theme park ride, in a genre that had not seen success in 50 years!)

Their strategy was the same, they wrote their own story that borrowed elements from the game, but did not strictly follow it. The film stands alone, and does not require it’s audience to be intimately familiar with the source material. The nods to the game throughout were great, but I was relieved that I was able to enjoy this film for what it was, rather than constantly looking for where it deviated from the games.

This movie clearly was made for someone like me, and in my party of four, three of us, who were all guys, loved it. The fourth, who was the only woman in the group, was less than impressed, and complained that it was too much action. If you’re expecting Citizen Kane, you stand to be disappointed, but if you expect this to be another video game adaptation, you are in for a real treat!

Watch Get Him To The Greek Description

(from imdb.com)

I saw the premiere of this movie in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood hotel and casino. I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I was really excited to finally see this movie, especially since it was with the cast. Sadly, I was disappointed.

If you are looking for the Aldous Snow from Forgetting Sarah then forget it. No more “Excuse me, missus, I’ve lost a shoe… like this one. It’s like this one’s fellow… it’s sort of the exact opposite in fact of that – not an evil version but just, you know, a shoe like this” or “*after spilling cranberry juice on his shirt* Oh God, please take my eyes, but not the shirt! “. While Brand is funny as Aldous Snow at times, the character just isn’t the same. Stoller expanded greatly on him in order for this character to be able to support a full movie, but I think he fell short of accomplishing this successfully and ended up robbing Aldous Snow of what made him so funny in the first place.

Jason Segel wrote Forgetting Sarah Marshall and came up with this character in the first film. Nicholas Stoller, the director of Forgetting, directed and wrote this film without input from Segel and you can tell the difference. Aldous no longer has the funny and stupid lines that made him so memorable. Instead his character entertains by gross out humor and ridiculous actions. Some have warned that this movie is not like Forgetting and I completely agree; but what they haven’t said is that Aldous Snow isn’t the same character either. Sure, some elements have returned but, as stated above, what made this character great has not.

You’d expect Russel Brand to carry this movie but he actually seems to make the movie drag on. Luckily, Jonah Hill manages to pick up some of the slack and Hill provides almost all of the funniest parts. It’s sad that Russel doesn’t deliver but I don’t blame him for not living up to par, I blame Stoller for taking away what made Aldous Snow so funny in the first place.

This is a good movie, but they shouldn’t have marketed it as Russell Brand returning as Aldous Snow. I think this is giving people a false idea of what this movie actually is. If you go in expecting Brand to do nothing but flawlessly execute hilarious lines, like from the first movie, then be prepared to be disappointed. If you go in with an open mind and try to forget the Aldous Snow from the first movie then you might actually like it. Sadly, for me I went it wanting to see the Aldous Snow from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and left wishing this film was better.

Watch Splice Description

(from imdb.com)

I was privileged enough to catch a screening of Splice last night that headlined the director Vincenzo Natali as a special guest. I’ve been a moderate fan of his work since his eerie and claustrophobic feature, Cube. Like Cube, I found that this movie was able to set an atmosphere that was almost palatable throughout the film. The main characters, Elsa and Clive (played by Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody, respectively) were both likable and detestable, and yet all the time believable throughout the film. I credit Natali’s writing with this emotional tug-of-war, because he was able to explain the motives of the characters without giving too much away and forcing the pacing to lag. (The man is whip smart, and it showed through his handling of the Q&A session after the movie). They do some despicable things, but Natali oft times tries to explain the character’s background to justify certain actions. I appreciate the effort, but at the same time, I felt the film required some serious suspension of disbelief on the part of its viewers to really swallow some scenes and resulting relationships.

After seeing the movie, you’ll probably realize you’ve seen this movie and premise before. Without giving too much away, this tale reminds me a lot of Jurassic Park. The overarching narrative parallels the sentiments of Dr. Malcom from Jurassic Park (“but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. “). The character’s themselves were even named after pivotal actors in Bride of Frankenstein (Colin Clive and Elsa Lanchester), an homage to one of the great creatures of Science Fiction films, and a source of inspiration to the director himself. The hybrid starts off looking quite alien, but evolves into looking quite human-like (probably due to budget constraints, as well as done to help the viewer identify and empathize with the creature) with legs immediately reminding me of the aliens from The Arrival (1996). Throughout the film, you could see the evolution of all the characters that contributed to the final climax of the film. Elsa and Clive make a lot of mistakes and poor judgments throughout the film considering how ‘brilliant’ these scientists were supposed to be. They try to approach the creation of this hybrid being with an objective mind – purely for the sake of science. However, in turn, they make a lot of ‘human’ errors along the way where their emotions come into play. As Chaos Theory explains, small variations in initial conditions renders long-term predictions impossible. The movie keeps you guessing throughout. It evolves in an uncontrolled way, just like the hybrid the scientists created. Like every other creature feature flick before it (Frankenstein, Jurassic Park and even Species), everything culminates into a final climactic scene where the makers are forced to atone for their actions.

The creature effects were solid and the actress playing Dren is amazingly beautiful and exotic looking. Her mild androgyny was perfect for the role. Her sharp movements seemed quite alien to me and she took the creature further than what special effects could have done alone. Brody and Polley were both solid actors throughout the film. I particularly enjoyed Brody’s wardrobe and styling. The pacing of the film started almost magical, like ET, then quickly picked up pace, paralleling the frenetic tension the scientists themselves must have been feeling.

It wasn’t a perfect movie by any means and it certainly wasn’t one of my favourites in recent years, but I enjoyed it. If I had to compare it to his earlier work, Cube, I would have to say that Cube made a much more lasting impression (I own it and recommend it to friends often). This movie is a fun way to spend an evening. You’ll come out of the theatre with a positive experience, but it probably won’t be a movie you’d rush out to see a second time.
