Watch The Illusionist Description

This movie is one of the surprises of the year. A charming little movie with a big message about the inevitability of change.

A once proud and talented master magician has now grown old and nearly forgotten. Where once he packed performance houses, he now performs his tricks from department store windows. This is a magician whose time has passed him by.

One day while on tour he meets a young girl who works at the hotel where he is staying. They strike up a conversation, and when she learns he is a magician she is enthralled. She thinks his magic is real and decides to follow him on his tour of little clubs.

The rest of the movie deals with their relationship and the effect it has on both of them as the girl begins to tire of the old magician.

The animation in this movie is breathtaking. Everything is hand drawn (no CGI), which is refreshing.

Watch True Grit 2010 Description

True Grit is a remake of the 1969 John Wayne movie of the same name. Though this edition follows the book more than that classic film.

The plot is simple and easy to follow. After her father is gunned down by an outlaw, 14 year old Mattie Ross hires Rooster Cogburn, a US Marshall, to track down and bring her father’s killer to justice. True Grit is basically a chase movie.

First of all, it would be impossible to cast this movie any better. Jeff Bridges was born to play Rooster Cogburn. He is gruff, smart and doesn’t care what anybody thinks of him. There is no need to make comparisons to John Wayne, Bridges version is just as good.

Matt Damon plays Laboeuf, a Texas Ranger who accompanies Cogburn on the hunt. And Josh Brolin plays Tom Chaney, the killer of Mattie’s father. This is a real powerhouse of actors in a single movie. But even as good as all of them are, the revelation is the young actress who plays Mattie Ross … Hailee Steinfeld. Hailee pretty much steals the movie with her portrayal of the determined girl looking for revenge.

An outstanding western.

Watch Gulliver’s Travels 2010 Description

Jack Black is not the first person that comes to mind when thinking of the hero in Gulliver’s Travels, but that is who this movie gave us. So we have a protagonist that acts like Black’s character from School of Rock.

The film tries to modernize a few things. Black works in the mail room of a large New York publishing company and is smitten with a beautiful editor of travel articles. When a job opens up in her area he applies, though he has no writing skills. So he plagiarizes an online article for his job interview and gets the job.

Once hired he is immediately sent to Bermuda on assignment. As he passes though the Bermuda Triangle he gets caught up in a storm and is almost killed. But he survives and washes up on a beach of an uncharted island. When he awakens he finds he is restrained, and there are many little people surrounding him.

He has arrived in Lilliput.

The rest of the movie follows the famous storyline, but of course it has been tailored to fit Jack Black’s comedic style. This film can be watched by the entire family without any problem.
