Watch I Am Number Four Description

This movie follows the life of a young alien teenager John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) who must live a life of concealment. Moving from planet to planet and town to town, he and his protector Henri (Timothy Olyphant of Deadwood) must stay one step ahead of a race of Mogadorians who will stop at nothing to kill him and the few remaining species like him.

John is one of the last of a type of alien who will eventually gain special powers as they grow into adulthood. The Mogadorians are hunting these last few beings to kill them before that happens. For reasons that I will not reveal, the special aliens must be killed in a specific order. John is number 4, which means he will be the next target after number 3 is murdered.

Henri’s job is to protect John until his powers appear. As they move from town to town Henri searches the Internet for references or pictures of John and deletes them. His main task is to keep John off “The Grid” so he cannot be found.

John and Henri settle in a small town where John enrolls into the local high school. One day something happens that alerts John and Henri that Number 3 has been killed, meaning that the gang of killers are now coming for John.

With no where else to flee, John and Henri prepare for the final epic battle that will take place at the high school. That final battle is something to see!

Watch Unknown Description

Liam Neeson plays Dr. John Martin, a man on vacation with his wife when he is involved in a car wreck. He awakens from his coma to find that he remembers who he is, but apparently no one else does. There is someone else with his wife who claims to be Dr Martin … and his wife agrees.

This is the begining of one of the smartest movies made in a long time. Neeson just came off a terrific role in the hit movie Taken, and now he has followed up with this gem.

Martin begins to wonder if he is going crazy. No one he remembers seems to remember him. As he tries to make sense of what is going on, he discovers that people are starting to try to kill him.

Then begins what turns out to be two simultaneous chases …. Martin is chasing who he is and why he remembers things that no one else does, and at the same time he tries to avoid the mysterious men who are chasing him wanting to kill him. Alfred Hitchcock was a master of this type of double chase action, the innocent man running to clear his name before he is caught by the people trying to kill him.

Unknown is not of the same level as a Hitchcock masterpiece, but as an entertaining and intelligent movie this is worth the price of admission.

Watch The Way Back Description

The Way Back tells the tale of World War 2 prisoners in a Russian concentration camp (gulag) in Siberia who attempt an impossible escape across thousands of miles of barren land. Their plan is to get out of the prison and walk all the way to India to freedom.

This is not your typical war movie with lots of explosions and action. In fact, there are long stretches of film where there seems to be little going on other than walking and searching for food and shelter. But you can’t keep your eyes off the movie. A great job by director Peter Weir.

The stand out performance from this unbelievable film is given by Colin Farrell. As the extremely violent and unpredictable Russian criminal “along for the ride”, Farrell is menacing as the prisoner whose “special abilities” might come in handy during the escape.

Farrell has been so good in recent movies that you forget that he had that “bad boy” Hollywood image not so long ago.

Watch Sanctum Description

Sanctum tells the story of a team of explorers who investigate a previously unknown system of caves and drop-offs that has just been discovered in a jungle. The team, lead by Frank (Richard Roxburgh) is made up of very experienced mountain climbers and divers. Unfortunately, Carl, the financier of this mission, feels since he is bankrolling this expedition that he can bring along anyone he’d like … no matter how inexperienced and useless they may be.

Well the inexperienced start dropping like flies once a cyclone whips into town and begins flooding the maze of caves. With their only known exit blocked, the explorers must find some way out before everybody eventually drowns or fall off cliffs to their deaths.

This is a very exciting and suspenseful movie that will keep most viewers on the edge of their seats.

Watch Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster Description

Superstar Donnie Yen reurns to this latest installment as Yip Man, the master martial artist who always finds himself in the worst possible circumstances.

This movie starts up pretty much right after the events in the first movie where Yen flees to Hong Kong from China. He wants to settle down and teach martial arts (Wing Chun), but almost immediately finds he has to fight leaders from the Wushu schools for approval.

Sammo Hung is new to the cast, and plays Master Hung, the best of the enemy masters who want to fight Yen for supremacy. The fights between Hung and Yen are nothing short of fantastic. Hung choreographed all the fight scenes himself, and some of these are so good that people will be talking about some of them forever.

Ip Man 2 Legend of the Grandmaster puts the bar for new martial arts movies so high that it is difficult to think that any movie could come along in the near future that could match it. Unless that is Ip Man 3.

Watch The Mechanic 2011 Description

Jason Statham stars as Arthur Bishop, an experienced “problem solver” (read that as “hit man”) for a large unnamed corporation. Bishop has been a loyal company man for years, in fact he has been their best killer.

Meticulous with an eye for the smallest detail, Bishop is able to make each assassination appear as a believable accident with no hint of foul play.

One day Bishop gets his new assignment … to bump off his handler. Even though he is conflicted about killing his friend, he does so because that is what he is paid to do. Then, in a contrived turn of events, his former handler’s son becomes his protege. Bishop teaches him just about everything he knows, knowing that some day the kid will find out who really offed his dad and will come looking for revenge.

Though you know that the movie is setting everything up for a final showdown, the payoff is so good that you don’t mind the paper-thin plot and convenient coincidences.

Watch Avatar Description

It is impossible to overstate what effect this movie will have on the entire film industry. The visuals are something that have not been seen before. My guess is that James Cameron decided to use a new technology that had not really been perfected, and then perfected it during the making of this movie. The characters are so rich and stunning, with movements that look so natural that you forget that you are watching CGI. This is also the best example of 3D technology that I have ever seen. Gone are those red and green tinted paper 3d glasses that people used to wear not so many years ago. Replaced by real glasses that actually do something, not just an optical illusion.

The story deals with what many see as the danger of unchecked technological advances. The destruction of natural resources plays a central theme in this world.

Watch Yogi Bear Description

I don’t know how many comtemporary children actually know who Yogi Bear and Boo Boo are, but Dan Aykroyd does a pretty decent job sounding like Yogi from the cartoons, and Justin Timberlake is just spot-on with his Boo Boo impersonation. Maybe this movie should have been targeted more toward people who appreciate the artistry.

The animated Yogi and Boo Boo characters are really well done as they look pretty natural walking around Jellystone Park. And the interaction with human actors (like Tom Cavanagh’s Mr Ranger) is seemless. There is alot of money up there on the screen.

But how does the movie do with the kids? I thought the plot of closing down Jellystone Park was a bit intense for little children, with kids turning to their moms and asking “but where will they live?”. If you are going to target this to very young children then you should be more careful no to scare your audience. But kids will like the way the characters move and especially talk. And of course no one can swipe a picnic basket like Yogi bear.

Watch The Green Hornet 2011 Description

No remake of the Green Hornet could ever equal, let alone surpass, the original 1960 tv version. Why? Because Bruce Lee is still dead. Anyone old enough to have watched that show and know who Bruce Lee was knows that he was the only reason to watch an otherwise ridiculous show.

This version has no Bruce Lee … that is strike one. This version has almost no plot, at least one that I can remember…. that is strike two. Seth Rogan playing Britt Reid (the green hornet) as a foul mouthed, border line racist was utterly disgusting…. strike three. This was a movie intended for children?

This must have been a parady of The Green Hornet because it certainly wasn’t a homage. It is impossible to tell if this is supposed to be a comedy or action film. No matter, it is terrible at being either.

A nice waste of my 2 hours.

Watch Season of the Witch Description

Nicolas Cage plays Behmen and Ron Perlman plays Felson, two troublesome medieval knights who join a crusade by the Roman Catholic Church to have their past transgressions forgiven. The purpose of the crusade is to fight against Muslims.

The two knights turn out to be some of the best fighters in the military, but they become disillusioned when they hear that many innocent people are being killed in the name of the Church. When they witness the slaughter of a completely defenseless woman they decide they want no more of this. Donning disguises they slip out of the battle and escape.

After they get to a distant town they are recognized as deserters and arrested. Their one way out is to make a deal to escort a young girl who is believed to be a witch to a distant monastary for trial. If they deliver the girl then they will be released.

The rest of the movie deals with their journey to deliver this supposed witch to the monastary for trial. Not everyone is going to make it alive. This is an excellent dark and scary suspense thriller.
