Watch Alpha and Omega Description

As an animated film the first thing you notice is that the animation is not on par with Pixar or even Dreamworks. This is a film by a relatively new studio called Crest. By what this movie lacks in the character renderings it makes up for with a really good story.

Humphrey and Lilly are male and female wolves from two neighboring wolf packs. Humphrey is from the Omega pack and Lilly is from the Alpha pack. The two packs coexist but it is forbidden to have inter-pack romantic relationships.

One day hunters capture Humphrey and Lilly as they are out alone together. They are taken from their Canadian wilderness and transported to the United States where it is hoped that they will mate and repopulate a dwindling wolf population.

With this setup the movie becomes the tale of the journey as the two wolves escape and attempt to find their way home. Along the way they encounter dangers and obstacles that bring them closer together, and they even begin to develop romantic feelings for each other.

Alpha and Omega is a very cute movie with adult themes about love and law, specifically family law and obligation. Kids will love this movie, although it is doubtful that they will recognize the message.

Watch Monsters vs. Aliens 3D Description

This is a very fun movie about alien invasion. An evil alien empire sets its sights on the planet earth and decides to invade, conquer and inhabit the planet. The people on earth have no real defense against these much more advanced species except their little “secret” weapons.

It seems that for the past 50 years the government has been finding and holding several earth-bound monsters in an unknown, area 51 type of complex. They now have a total of 5 monsters, with the last one having been a human until she was hit by a meteor on her wedding day and turned into a 50 foot monster.

Fortunately these monsters agree to fight the invading aliens to try to save the earth. However it is unfortunate that they are pretty much inept at most everything, so victory seems a remote possibility.

With this story setup you would expect a pretty good movie, and Monsters vs aliens is quite good. If you are older you will recognize homage being paid to quite a few classic, old-time science fiction films such as Monster Zero, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Close Encounters, Mothra and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

An interesting point about all of this is that it appears that the filmmakers have targeted this movie to a younger audience, given that several of the monsters are cute in a Monsters Inc sort of way. But unless you are an older adult you will not catch all the references to the movies of old.

Nevertheless, this is an entertaining movie for the whole family with nothing objectionable for kids.

Watch Despicable Me Description

When I saw this movie I had no idea what it was about. I didn’t even know that it was in 3D (aren’t they all now?) until they handed me my glasses. But as the picture started I soon realized that this was something completely different.

The animation is stunning, something that I think would make even Pixar proud. I wonder how much father we can go in animation since the characters now are rendered so lifelike.

The storyline is certainly original and well developed. There are two super villains named Gru and Vector who are forever trying to outdo each other to become the best in their profession. They have gone back and forth outdoing each other for that short-lived title. But Gru has come up with the ultimate villainous plan .. to steal the moon!

Unfortunately for Gru, Vector has learned of his moon-stealing plan and has successfully stolen his one of a kind “shrinking machine”. And since this machine is a vital part of Gru’s plan to perform the theft, he needs it back.

The problem is that vector has stored the machine in his high security, impregnable castle that is just about impossible to break into. Without an imaginative plan Gru will never be able to get the machine back.

Then an opportunity presents itself. Three orphaned little girls run into Gru one day and take a liking to him. They would love to live with him and have him become their new father. Gru sees this as an opportunity to get his machine back. He decides to temporarily adopt them, enroll them in Girl Scouts and then have them go to Vector’s castle to sell him cookies. With vector’s guard down Gru will be able to enter the fortress and steal back the shrinking machine.

How is that for an original script?

I can’t say enough of how good this movie is. You are just going to have to see it for yourself. Try not to laugh too hard.

Toy Story 3 ends one of the best film trilogies ever, certainly the best animated film trilogy of all time.

It’s been 11 years since Toy Story 2 was released, and I can tell you the wait was worth it. That the animation is stunning should be no surprise since the technology has advanced 11 years, and Pixar is still the king of animation (sorry Disney). But the story is just fantastic, and, if you grew up watching the series it will make you very nostalgic.

Andy is grown up now and about to leave for college. At 17 he has long stopped playing with Woody, Buzz and the gang and instead turned his attention to bigger toys and girls. A scene early on shows this as the toys try one last time to divert Andy’s attention back to them. It’s really quite heartbreaking to see the hurt in Woody’s face when the attempt fails and he realizes that things will never again be the same.

The story of this movie shows what happens when the toys are mistakenly donated to a local day-care center. Initially the toys are elated because this means that they will have children playing with them again. But things change when nighttime comes and the toys discover that mean toys take control of the place. The rest of the movie shows their attempt at surviving and then escaping their situation.

But under all the laughs and fun lies an undercurrent of sadness. People who have grown up with this series, and adults long past childhood, may have a hard time keeping their composure during the ending of this movie. They will feel the loss not only of these beloved toys, but of the things they had to leave behind themselves as they grew into adulthood.

Pixar has said that Toy Story 3 ends the series. I say good, not because I don’t want to see more of my animated friends, but because this story arc cannot be improved upon. A series about love and loss and growing up.

When super hero and super dog Bolt learns that his owner has been kidnapped by his arch nemesis, he jumps into action to rescue her by using all of his canine super powers.

That is the premise of this new and highly entertaining family movie by the folks at Disney. What we soon learn however is that Bolt is a dog that stars in his own tv show, and that all of his super dog powers are just special effects added to each episode. But Bolt doesn’t know this and believes that he really can do all of the nifty things from his show.

This leads to some very humorous situations as he repeatedly tries to use these powers with little success.

Bolt is a nice film that children of all ages will be able to enjoy. Even mom and dad should like this immensely.
