Watch The Kids Are All Right Description

Not too often you see a mainstream movie whose leads are a lesbian couple played by Hollywood “A” type stars. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore play a middle aged lesbian couple who lead a quite suburban life. The passion has long left the relationship to the point that even watching gay porn together does not always put them in the mood for sex. Their life is upended when both their teenage kids decide they want to meet their biological dad, the one who donated the sperm.

Mark Ruffalo plays Paul, the dad that the kids eventually track down. A good guy all around who has never settled down, he disrupts the family balance when he enters their lives. Paul enters into a passionate, discrete relationship with one of the lesbian mothers. As he gets to know his kids better he develops feelings for them as a father.

The Kids Are All Right is a remarkable movie about what happens to dysfunctional alternate lifestyle family when a dysfunctional third party enters their lives. All three leads (Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and especially Mark Ruffalo) are excellent and it wouldn’t be surprising if an Academy Award nomination came their way.

Watch No Strings Attached Description

This film is lucky to have Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman in the lead roles because this movie is such a cliche that it could have been a disaster. But the soaring chemistry between these two likeable stars makes this a passable romantic comedy.

Kutcher plays Adam, a low level assistant on a show that looks very similar to High School Musical. Adam is a nice guy with a long-term girlfriend that he adores. When she dumps him (for his father!) he spirals into a “lost weekend” of heavy drinking and cell-phoning. He gets the idea to dial up up every girl in his contact list to see if he can get a one night stand with any of them.

Turned down by everyone, he awakens from his drunken haze in the apartment of Emma (Natalie Portman). Adam has had a thing for Emma for a very long time. He pitches his idea of meaningless sex to her and she accepts, since she is always too busy to meet people due her long hours working at the hospital.

What we get during the rest of the movie are alot of sex jokes and sexual situations as these two hookup over and over again. Of course keeping this type of arrangement non-emotional is tough to do, so there are some good laughs as they try to keep from falling for each other.

An average romantic comedy due to the likability of the two stars.

Watch The Dilemma Description

The Dilemna, starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James as lifelong buddies, is a surprisingly dark and adult oriented movie that doesn’t appear to be targeted to the under 25 moviegoer. This comes as a shock since just about every movie either of these actors make are laser-targeted to that group.

In this movie, the “dilemma” is whether or not Ronny (Vince Vaughn) should tell his childhood friend Nick (Kevin James) that he saw his wife kissing and making out with a much yonger man. Part of the hesitation is due to Ronny not wanting to hurt his friend. But the bigger resaon is that Ronny and Nick have teamed up to pitch a possibly lucrative idea to the Chrysler Corporation, and Ronny doesn’t want to take a chance that this news could derail Nick and the project.

The movie combines laughs with serious moments. The destruction of a marriage is not something to take lightly.

Vaughn and James make a very good team and kind of remind me of that old Abbott and Costello partnership from way back. I can see them doing more movies together in the future.

Just one criticism … no one would ever believe that Kevin James and Winona Ryder were a couple.

Watch Yogi Bear Description

I don’t know how many comtemporary children actually know who Yogi Bear and Boo Boo are, but Dan Aykroyd does a pretty decent job sounding like Yogi from the cartoons, and Justin Timberlake is just spot-on with his Boo Boo impersonation. Maybe this movie should have been targeted more toward people who appreciate the artistry.

The animated Yogi and Boo Boo characters are really well done as they look pretty natural walking around Jellystone Park. And the interaction with human actors (like Tom Cavanagh’s Mr Ranger) is seemless. There is alot of money up there on the screen.

But how does the movie do with the kids? I thought the plot of closing down Jellystone Park was a bit intense for little children, with kids turning to their moms and asking “but where will they live?”. If you are going to target this to very young children then you should be more careful no to scare your audience. But kids will like the way the characters move and especially talk. And of course no one can swipe a picnic basket like Yogi bear.

Watch Another Year Description

Another year is a very effective film from Mike Leigh about the nature and realities of relationships. We are shown this through the eyes of Tom and Gerri, who are a long-time happily married couple in their sixties.

Tom (Jim Broadbent) is a geologist and his wife Gerri (Ruth Sheen) is a psychotherapist. Together they have had a very fullfilling 35 years together, unlike most of their close friends who are experiencing various troubles in their lives.

The movie covers a full year in all their lives, broken up into the 4 seasons winter, spring, summer and fall. During this time each couple or person experiences life events such as birth, love and death. Depending upon their ages they also deal with such issues as sickness, mid life crises and aging.

We see that how each of these people handle these events are closely tied to how they feel about themselves and their current relationships. This film is a terrific depiction of the realities of love and happiness.

Watch Gulliver’s Travels 2010 Description

Jack Black is not the first person that comes to mind when thinking of the hero in Gulliver’s Travels, but that is who this movie gave us. So we have a protagonist that acts like Black’s character from School of Rock.

The film tries to modernize a few things. Black works in the mail room of a large New York publishing company and is smitten with a beautiful editor of travel articles. When a job opens up in her area he applies, though he has no writing skills. So he plagiarizes an online article for his job interview and gets the job.

Once hired he is immediately sent to Bermuda on assignment. As he passes though the Bermuda Triangle he gets caught up in a storm and is almost killed. But he survives and washes up on a beach of an uncharted island. When he awakens he finds he is restrained, and there are many little people surrounding him.

He has arrived in Lilliput.

The rest of the movie follows the famous storyline, but of course it has been tailored to fit Jack Black’s comedic style. This film can be watched by the entire family without any problem.

Watch Tangled Description

Disney’s Tangled is an instant classic. No debate. Finally, they have again made a family movie that can stand alongside their 1990s classics (The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, (Tarzan).

A sort of retelling of the original story, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) is stolen from her wealthy parents at a very young age by Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) and locked away in a tower. She does this because Rapunzel’s long hair is able to keep Gothel young. With each passing year Rapunzel wishes even more that she could escape and see all that the world has to offer.

One day shortly after Rapubzel turns 18, a very handsome robber named Flynn Ryder (Zachery Levi) breaks into the tower and discovers her by accident. After hearing her story Flynn agrees to get her out and away from the castle, which he does. What follows next is a series of fantastic adventures that these two get themselves into trying reclaim what they lost. Along the way they inevitably fall in love, just like in any other Walt Disney movie.

I dare you to try to take your eyes off the screen while the movie is running. The CGI (a Disney first?) is spectacular and looks as lifelike as any animated movie ever made. The attention to detail is incredible. If you look anywhere in the background you will see many smaller characters and events going on. And the music is just what you would expect from Disney.. simply great.

Tangled is a landmark movie from a studio that has once again found itself.

Watch Morning Glory Description

When a young ambitious tv producer of a New Jersey morning show abruptly gets fired, she hires in as the new producer at a competing but struggling forth place morning show. With an eclectic group of anchors and reporters at her disposal, she attempts to save the ratings and the show.

Rachel McAdams plays Becky Fuller, a very resourceful and spirited young professional who dreams of one day producing the Today show. This is a role that you might expect to see played by Anne Hathaway, but Miss McAdams is perfect in the role.

When she lands at the local fourth place network IBS as the producer, she is immediately confronted with a group of angry and odd personalities.

Her first decision is to fire the very creepy, sex obsessed news anchor. She replaces him with local tv legend Mike Pomeroy (played Harrison Ford). Pomeroy wants no part of this, but Becky is able to blackmail him with a little known clause in his contract.

Working as the number two anchor, and sitting next to Pomeroy, is no-nonsense and egotistical ex-beauty queen Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton). Her no-nonsense abrasive manner and continual attempts to bring attention to herself rub Pomeroy and everyone else the wrong way.

The movie follows how McAdams must make these battling personalities work together in an effort to revive the morning show’s sinking ratings and save the program

Watch Life As We Know It Description

Life as we know it has probably the saddest undercurrent of any romantic comedy I have ever seen.

The movie begins as two single people, Holly Berenson (played by Katherine Heigl) and Eric Messer (played by Josh Duhamel) are thrown together via a blind date setup by mutual married friends Peter (Hayes MacArthur) and Allison (Christina Hendricks). Holly and Eric immediately take a strong disliking to each other, and in fact never finish the date.

Afterwards Holly and Eric live their separate lives, occasionally running into each other at different places around town. But they are suddenly and unexpectedly thrown together when a tragic event occurs.

Their mutual friends Peter and Allison are killed in a car accident. At the reading of the will it is revealed that they left guardianship of their one year old daughter Sophie to Holly and Eric, along with their huge home.

The rest of this movie deals with the two friends trying to put aside their mutual distain for each other and do the right thing by watching over Sophie.

I’ll bet you can figure out how this movie ends.
