Now here is something that is close to my heart. An animation film based on 1950’s sci-fi fodder – it’s just got to work. Or has it?

Thankfully, yes it does. As film lovers in the digital age, we have become so spoilt for choice over the last ten years, what with Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Wall-E to name but a few – that we are quick to knock films of this genre with even the slightest flaw – forgetting the time, patience and effort that goes into producing one of these modern day miracles.

Monsters Vs. Aliens isn’t a classic by any stretch of the imagination, but is ludicrously good fun if you’re a fan of science fiction. There are too numerous references to list here, but needless to say if you’ve ever watched a black and white sci-fi flick, you’ll recognise plenty here.

Technically, the film holds it’s own, and at the same time manages to resist the temptation to overwhelm the viewer with flash/bang trickery. The monsters all have their own endearing qualities that children and adults alike will love – while the aliens thankfully fall into the category of ’so smart they’re stupid’ that made the likes of ‘Mars Attacks!’ so much fun. The vocal acting is competent and manages to keep disbelief at bay for the best part.

As mentioned before, MVA isn’t great great – but it’s not bad bad either, and there are plenty of animations that fall into that category that really do get a bad time in the press, simply for not being a Pixar movie. All aside, kids will love this – and if you’re a big kid like me, you’ll love it too.

Watch Despicable Me Description

Surprisingly, there seems to be a lot of PG rated films lately – which is nice for families.

We saw the previews in 3D and it looked like a cute film.

Which it was.

Just don’t go comparing it to anything by Pixar, but it has heart and humor.

Won’t bother to repeat the story.. But it was nice to see Love as the central message of a movie.

Love of a mother for a son, a son for his mother, children for their dad.

And the minions love for ..um.. Grul.

The message is that we sometimes lose track of what is important to us (family) when success gets in the way. And that wanting to please other people (Grul wanting to please his mother) stops us from being whom we were meant to be.

The minions were cute, but felt they could have been used more…

The cast was very good, and while the animation is not up to Pixar quality, the film was always watchable.

Ironically, my theater could only get the 2D version. Somehow, I think this would have been more fun in 3D.

Fun for the whole family – though there is one scene that looks like blood that could scare very young children.

Watch The Last Airbender Description

Based upon the Nickelodeon series Avatar- The Last Airbender.

First off, I watched season one of the series over the past few weeks and am watching season two currently. I love the series. Totally awesome work.

This review is of the currently released film directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

Review: Is this going to a be a super hit? An Academy Award winner? A deep drama? No. It’s a 400+ minute series truncated in to 100 minutes of special effects. Everyone will bicker about parts of the series being clipped off, combined with others parts, parts shifted. Which parts were most important to you? The cabbage vendor? Mang the gap-toothed fan-girl who called Katara a floozy?

Everyone will have a favorite part, and in a film adaptation you can guarantee those sacred cows will be slaughtered in the name of condensing the film in to one easily chewable bite for the target demographic.

I think if I could have one wish for the film, it is that I wish it was about three hours long so they had time to really delve in to the characters and the events that shaped Aang, Katara and Sokka etc.

That wasn’t to be. The target demographic is the short-attention span generation and 90-100 min was all they had to tell a really long and deep story, which is a crying shame.

Without spoiling things I’ll say that series events are shifted around. Parts that were originally Katara’s became Aang’s. Some bits were chopped off. Some bits were shifted slightly. I feel that the overall vibe was there, and the cuts and shifts made were due to time constraints to build on Aang’s character as we had little time for anything else. I would have loved to see more characterization, but again, time constraints.

Show don’t tell. I hear that all the time and in this case it was necessary. There was a lot of ground to cover (literally) and a bit of back story was necessary.

Effects. Awesome. Choreography, awesome. Acting, some was a bit flat, some good. Plot, largely the same as the original series and largely true to it. I believe that the writer and director did a fine job in dealing with the constraints they had. If they had more freedom it could have been better. Just remember that their hands are tied in many ways on this.

Whitewashing? I call BS. While the original series was entirely Asian in many ways, the film is more regionalized: some nations being Asian, some Indian, some Caucasian, some mixed. Some sigils were neutralized. Still the overall flavor was right. It’s still the same story, with the same theme. The regionalization is there to make it palatable for everyone: Whites, Asians, Indians, Blacks, everyone, not just a single culture, which I think is reasonable.

Pronunciation of names? Seriously people? That’s a pretty lame nit-pick. Gimme a break.

I think I would have liked a fat uncle Iroh, but Shan Toub did an OK job with it. Noah Ringer did a fine job as Aang. Dev Patel was good as Prince Zuko. Nicola Peltz (Katara) and Jackson Rathbone (Sokka) were a bit flat, but they didn’t have a lot to work with either. They didn’t really get a chance to shine. M. Night Shyamalan directed without his usual tricks, switcheroos, and whammies.

The Grade: Overall, the film was enjoyable but felt rushed. Like the whole thing was a montage or a highlight reel of the series. The kids in the theater cheered and said it was awesome, so that is great. If it does it’s job it’ll get people to watch the series for more of the good stuff as this was just a taste.

Did it suck more than anything has sucked before? No. Fans of the series will likely be let down as their expectations will not be met. Then again, fans are always bastards to make an adaptation for. Everyone judges an adaptation by the original material and not on its own merits. It’s called an ADAPTATION for a reason. Still, you can never please some people.

Watch Toy Story 3 Description

Is Toy Story 3 good? Yes, it is. Is it exciting? Yes. Is the animation good? Excellent. Is it worth the money? It’s worth. Is it better than the previous two? Much, much better. Toy Story 3 is an excellent movie for all ages.

First, the animation. The moves of the characters are simply perfect. Ken and Barbie, they’re robotic moves are so breathtaking. The moves are simply so detail and mesmerizing.

The appearances. Not much to talk about. But, the appearances of the characters were perfectly designed. The main characters were really cool. Ken and Barbie, they’re really designed in detail. For Barbie, the line where is visible in the neck was really detail. Ken is also really detail especially with his body. Lot-o-Huggin’-Bear was also carefully designed by the paper which often appears on dolls listing the warning or whatever.

The way the movie is presented. Very well done. In around 90 minutes of running time (excluding Day & Night), the movie was not boring at all. It had some laughable expressions which are pretty funny. I liked it when Buzz turns into Spanish mode where most of the audience laughed. That moment was hysterical. The scenes were also thrilling like the end scene (which I’m not going to tell you) or the scenes in Sunnyside. I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

The new characters. Well, I think there’s one negative point. I think little kids around the age of 3, 4 or 5 might be scared with the appearance of Big Baby, because, his appearance is kind of scary for little kids.

The 3D effects. Not so cheesy and not so breathtaking but pretty good. The depths of the items in the film were not bad.

The sound acting. They were really good. Tom Hanks on Woody was really good. He really projected his voice until he becomes a real Woody. Tim Allen on Buzz Lightyear was also good and satisfying. He really sounded like a real astronaut or space ranger. The others were also good. But, I think Tom Hanks on Woody still has the best projection of voice in the film.

Final thing, the short film attached to it: Day & Night. It was shockingly, awfully, crazily cool. That short film was quite funny. It was really good. Overall, the short film compliments to the film to be a very good movie.

I really recommend this movie to you, readers. If you want, watch it in 3D because the 3D effects (like I said) weren’t so bad but were also weren’t so good. Your kids will definitely be thrilled with the film. I think this is the best animated film of the year, or even the best film of all 2010

Watch Hannah Montana The Movie Description

This movie is the lowest rated movie on IMDb that i decided to watch. So many people thrashed this when it came out to cinema, it has huge percentage of 1/10 ratings, and i thought that could be human stupidity, prejudice and hatred towards these kind of movies in general. And that is completely correct, this movie isn’t objectively underrated, if movies were math and you could calculate how good and how bad it is, how much is it worth, then this film definitely wouldn’t be on 3.0/10 rating. I’m not mathematician though, my rating of any movie isn’t objectively based, each rating i give is based on my personal opinion. When it comes to movie like ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ then my rating is (and everyone’s else’s should be too) based on amount of entertainment movie gave me, amount of UNBEARABLE flaws (bearable flaws are completely different story that don’t affect the movie in my opinion), likability of characters and also music (specificly for this movie, because it’s a big and important ingredient to it).

After seeing this movie i was fairly pleased and satisfied with it, doubling the rating that this movie has been given. Music is good, likable, catchy and somewhat emotional, that song ‘The Climb’ isn’t bad at all, i was surprised at first that it won “Best song from a movie” MTV Movie Award in competition with favored Paramore (‘Twilight’) and Bruce Springsteen (‘The Wrestler’), but that was before i saw this movie, now i understand why it won the award. Other songs are also catchy, although much “lighter” and usual for teen flicks. I know some people dislike the whole Billy Ray Cyrus – Miley Cyrus story and therefore they had prejudice towards this movie, in this movie they did a duet that i thought was pretty okay and likable. There weren’t many of those unbearable flaws that i mentioned earlier on, of course the whole plot is unrealistic and silly, but who cares? This isn’t some spiritually inspiring movie, this is a teen/chick flick… Likability of characters is on good level, between medium and high. Miley Cyrus was at start kind of shaky and not so likable in my opinion, but later on everything was alright. Everyone else pretty much fit in good, as in any other higher-rated chick flick. Their acting on the other hand is silly, exactly on level of newer chick flicks, and everyone who makes complaints about it should make the same complaints on 1000 of other movies.

You shouldn’t judge this movie by ratings and comments of other people, this movie doesn’t disappoint, it isn’t a masterpiece, a “MUST SEE” or anything like that, it’s just decent afternoon entertainment that could make you feel-good or feel stupid depending on what you expect and want from it. There are better ways of spending your 102 minutes of time, there are better teen flicks out there, but there are also many more that are much worse.

Watch Bolt Description

The 2000s have not been very kind to Walt Disney Animation. While there has been the occasional Emperor’s New Groove or Lilo and Stitch, the majority of their films from this decade have been rather mediocre (most notably 2005’s Chicken Little, which – ironically – remains the studio’s highest-grossing film of the 2000s). With that said, I initially had some doubts about Bolt, despite hearing that it would be Disney Animation’s first film supervised by Pixar founder John Lasseter. The surprisingly positive reviews posted shortly before the film’s release convinced me to buy a ticket. Thankfully, I was forced to eat my words; welcome back, Disney.

The film revolves around Bolt, a white German Shephered who has spent his entire life on the set of a TV show in which he portrays a “superdog”. As a result, he believes that the events on film (and his super powers) are real. When he is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he embarks on a cross-country journey to reunite with his owner and co-star, Penny. Along the way, Bolt teams up with a jaded alley cat named Mittens and a TV-obsessed hamster named Rhino who also happens to be an extreme Bolt fanboy.

First of all, the effects in this movie are unbelievable. Everything in the movie looks so realistic and yet doesn’t contradict with the animated cartoon-esquire characters. Also, while Bolt is obviously the star of the movie, the real comedy comes from his unlikely companions. In fact, my favorite character of the bunch is Mittens the cat, voiced excellently by Susie Essman. Very seldom do I hear/see a character and say “I can’t imagine anybody doing a better job playing him/her”, but Essman really brings a lot to this already memorable character. And though I found him to be pretty irritating at first, some of the best lines in the movie come from Rhino the hamster.

Lastly, in one of the opening scenes we see Bolt as he is in the TV Show to set the understanding of Bolt’s world. Seriously, that was made of awesome. The scene was action packed and full of excitement. I would watch the show that Bolt is in. If I had to have a complaint, it would be that it takes some ideas from several other films (such as Homeward Bound, Toy Story, and The Truman Show). That said, it still manages to feel like its own film, and with grace.

With terrific animation, an incredibly heartwarming story, and some of the most endearing characters I’ve ever seen on film (animated or otherwise), Bolt has not only become my favorite Disney film (Pixar included), but perhaps my absolute favorite movie of all time. It feels strange saying that, especially considering that I didn’t even expect to like the film, but I simply can’t think of a movie that I’ve loved more. It’s also one of the very few films that manages to bring me to tears every time that I watch it, and when a movie is able to affect me on that kind of level, it automatically becomes a winner.

Watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua Description

I expected this movie to be nothing but childish antics to make the kiddies laugh. Fart and burp jokes, bathroom humor, and nothing more than another movie propaganda that lies to audiences on how great a certain breed of dog are that then get people to impulse buy it, and dump it 6 months to a year later at the shelter (ala 101 Dalmations). Apparently Disney finally listened to the 100s of letters and petitions asking them to stop making the same cookie-cutter dog movie.

First, the trailers make you think Papi is the top dog in this movie. Its actually Chloe, the female chihuahua that the movie focuses on. If not for the supporting cast, the movie would have likely sucked. I was surprised at the heavy issues they dealt with in the movie and how well executed it was.

For one…Chloe is lost and found by a man who brings her to a dog fighting ring. Yes, dog fighting in a Disney movie. Though don’t be getting memories of White Fang. This dog fighting ring is not shown so bloodthirsty. You KNOW its a bad place. There are all sorts of dogs there, of several breeds. Pit bulls, German Shepherd, mastiffs, and dobermans. One of the pit bull mixes is sadly praying in Spanish. One of the other dogs says, “he always prays before a fight”. Chloe was brought there to be a bait dog. They never use the words “bait dog”. But they put her in the ring with El Dialbo, a bad-ass doberman. Delgado, a German shepherd breaks out of his cage, and releases the rest of the dogs, then he saves Chloe and all the dogs run for the hills. The owner of the fighting ring notices last minute that Chloe is wearing a diamond collar and knows she’s worth money and sends El Diablo to find her.

Papi and his owner, as well as the woman entrusted to care for Chloe go to Mexico to find her. They come upon two of the former fighters, a mastiff mix and a pit bull mix and they join them. On their journey, both dogs get adopted. We also find out Papi is adopted too. And at the end of the flick, a message to the audience about researching a breed before you get it and adopting over buying.

On stereotyping Mexicans, as a Hispanic American, I was not insulted in the least. You have the hero (human), who is Mexican, working as a landscaper, yes…stereotype, but they used that stereotype deliberately to show you how wrong people are. The heroine (human) insults him by assuming he can only speak Spanish and talks down to him in her own form of Spanish. He goes along with it. But with Jaime Lee Curtis character you see he is not just the hired help, but a member of her family as far as they are concerned. The millionaire seems to look at him as a son or nephew. And she treats his shelter dog, Papi very well too. In Mexico itself, you see people helping them out all the time. Yes, some of the places they go are not the nicer sides of town, but the people are good. I think the only people who have anything to complain about here are Dobermon owners. They kept from stereotyping all the other “dangerous breeds” but them.

It was no award winner, it was never meant to be. But it was a great family flick that doesn’t talk down to youngsters and its side stories were fantastic. Hopefully this movie makes future adopters out of kids and parents.

First, I went in with pretty low expectations. After this latest round of craptacular “remakes” or “reimaginings,” I was pretty much expecting the worst. However, I came away both pleased and surprised at the quality of the film; they not only created a worthy successor to the previous incarnation, but also created a proper film in its own right.

As to the plot of the movie, it is point for point the same as the Ralph Macchio original, so no surprises there. However changing the locale for the big move truly enhanced both the “menace” and the “fish out of water” dimension of the story. Locating the film in China meant that Dre (Jaden Smith) literally had no foothold in the world around him. As much as I was supposed to care about Daniel in the original, I had a hard time sympathizing with his plight. Being moved halfway around the world clarified the emotional content of this movie. And the film had a very broad emotional spectrum: it was equal parts funny, charming, scary, and triumphant. I found myself tearing up several times in the film because the predicaments felt very real as opposed to the original which seemed contrived.

The acting across the board is excellent. Taraji P. Henson shines when she is on screen, but she was underutilized. The Chinese actors are all excellent. The young actor who plays Dre’s nemesis is much more convincing as the thug/bully than in the original as is the head of the rival Kung Fu school. He’s not just a douchebag; he is a real menance, with a Yakuza vibe to him. When he threatens to bring pain and suffering, you know he is not kidding. But the two clear stars are Chan and Smith. Say what you will about Jackie Chan’s acting ability, but in this project he showed real depth. As Mr. Han, we see the years both as a martial artist and as a actor come together. I suspect part of the strength of this acting job was being able to act in his native language – he just seemed more comfortable. As for the young Mr. Smith, he is clearly channeling his dad’s early career which is fine for a tween actor. What the future holds is a valid question but for now, this level of charm and self-confidence makes Smith incredibly watchable.

Using China as the backdrop was simply a stroke of genius. The film could be seen as a travelogue for China and its culture. The cinematography is beautiful and evocative. While we can’t read the signs, the filmmakers make sure to create a “neighborhood” and a recognizable home base for the story. There is a very clear message about how both the US and China need each other but it is never really rammed down people’s throat. Many times we are treated to the food, the entertainment centers, the atmosphere of Beijing and the surrounding country as well. The martial arts are beautifully executed. As a student of Kung Fu San Soo, both the description of the mindset behind Kung Fu and the execution of the art are spot on. Chan is still the master of cinema martial arts, but every actor in the film shows great ability. In the final scene of the movie, there is a moment when Dre’s attackers salute Mr. Han, and I got this scene of Chan handing the torch on to this next generation. The credits mention a CG director but I would be hard pressed to tell you where it came in.

The weaknesses of this film are few. Some might have some qualms about the ages of the characters. In this film, the age group is stepped down to middle school, right around 12 years old. For me, this reduction in age added a charming innocent but also ramped up the impact of the violence. Just as seeing “Hit Girl” in “Kick Ass”, you get that weird disturbing experience of seeing a child who could seriously harm the adult. For me, that made the film all the more plausible and emotionally resonant. Others might have qualms about the cross culture aspect of the film, making the same complaint against it that was made against “Avatar”. From early in the film, you get this sense that the only change Dre will have to make is going from not knowing Kung Fu to knowing Kung Fu. In other words, the film comes off as though the US is culturally superior. But, while the character arc for Dre could have been more developed on this front, viewers will be pleased with how Dre begins to see the value of Chinese culture, especially in regards to respecting family. Lastly, my only head scratching moment was why did the film makers feel the need to keep the original title? This film I think would have worked well without reference to the original but because it is so dependent on the original for plotting and structure, perhaps the filmmakers felt the tip of the hat necessary. My only complaint is that the fighting style is not Karate which originates in Japan but rather Kung Fu, a Chinese martial art.

Final point: This is the first film I have seen that is truly a reimagining of the original. And it is so worth your time.

Some guy was giving out tickets to a test screening of this abomination to mankind, and I decided “Eh, free film and I always liked Marmaduke”. Well, I was wrong. This film is a physically painful experience. This film consists of the BAD jokes from Marley & Me. The difference is, Marley & Me was touching and funny and cute. This is horrible. No more words to fit this. HORRIBLE! The horrible scene that sticks out the most is the dancing dogs sequence that features a ton of dogs dancing around to music in a park. I just saw a preview for this film on TV, and the song “Tik Tok” was playing during it. Tik Tok, during a dog film commercial. The writing is horrible, the acting is horrible, the effects are horrible, the jokes are horrible, the music is horrible, EVERY SINGLE LAST THING IS HORRIBLE!

Watch Shrek Forever After Description

Shrek meets “its a wonderful life”. The fourth edition of this amazing movie series finds Shrek getting tired of being a domesticated daddy ogre, and when he’s had enough he makes one of those wishes that his life were different. Rumpelstiltskin hears this and sends him back to a time before he knew Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots and everybody else. Definitely one of those “be thankful for what you have” message movies. The CGI is spectacular … so much better than the last movie. And the jokes are just great. Donkey has probably the hands-down best line of this entire awesome series. If this is in fact the last movie of this series, it’s well done. Everyone will love this movie.
