Watch The Adjustment Bureau Description

Matt Damon plays David Norris, a candidate for the New York US Senate seat. He is a workaholic whose has been targeting this position for years.

When Norris steps into a men’s bathroom to do some last minute rehearsals for an important speech he is about to give, he is surprised by a beautiful woman who steps out of one of the bathroom stalls. Played by the radiant Emily Blunt, the woman emerging from the stall is named Elise. As the two begin to chat an instant attraction become apparent. They both eventually leave to continue on their way.

Some days later they meet again by accident on a bus. He learns that Elise is a professional ballarina who works in New York. They completely fall for each other and find the nearest hotel to begin their relationship.

The next day Norris is approached by several “Men in Black” types all whom are wearing the same type hat. The leader of this mysterious group is called Mr Richardson (played by Mad Men star John Slattery) and tells Norris that they are the people who make sure things go according to plan. Richardson continues to say that Norris and Elise are not meant to be together, and that they must stop their relationship immediately or the “Adjustment Bureau” will stop it for them.

The remainder of the movie deals with Norris trying to avoid the Adjustment Bureau without giving up his new love Elise. Along the way he discovers that not everything is as it appears, and that choices he has made during his lifetime may not have been real choices at all.

This is a superior mystery sure to have audiences thinking about the nature of reality and free will.

Watch No Strings Attached Description

This film is lucky to have Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman in the lead roles because this movie is such a cliche that it could have been a disaster. But the soaring chemistry between these two likeable stars makes this a passable romantic comedy.

Kutcher plays Adam, a low level assistant on a show that looks very similar to High School Musical. Adam is a nice guy with a long-term girlfriend that he adores. When she dumps him (for his father!) he spirals into a “lost weekend” of heavy drinking and cell-phoning. He gets the idea to dial up up every girl in his contact list to see if he can get a one night stand with any of them.

Turned down by everyone, he awakens from his drunken haze in the apartment of Emma (Natalie Portman). Adam has had a thing for Emma for a very long time. He pitches his idea of meaningless sex to her and she accepts, since she is always too busy to meet people due her long hours working at the hospital.

What we get during the rest of the movie are alot of sex jokes and sexual situations as these two hookup over and over again. Of course keeping this type of arrangement non-emotional is tough to do, so there are some good laughs as they try to keep from falling for each other.

An average romantic comedy due to the likability of the two stars.

Watch Up in the Air online for free and see an intelligent movie about a man whose job it is to fly around the country firing employees for big corporations.

George Clooney is perfect for the role of Ryan Bingham the terminator for hire. Clooney is so suave and easy that after he fires an obsolete employee, he has no problem convincing him that is really a good thing and that his life still has options. Easy for Clooney’s character to say since he is living an envious life as a single man with money. Bingham beds beautiful women that he meets in airport bars, and in fact has a semi-regular sexual encounter with another beautiful aquanitence when they can get their flight schedules to match.

But when one well known and liked employee kills herself after being terminated, Bingham begins to do some soul searching if he really wants to do this anymore. This is when the movie really gets good. The crash that Clooney’s character experiences is believable and realistic, with a twist ending that will catch you off guard.

Like the Igmar Bergman classic “Scenes from a Marriage” from the 1970s, Blue Valentine is one of the most realistic and unflinching looks at the disintegration of a marriage up close. And this movie owes everything to the exceptional acting performances of the two leads …. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Ryan Gosling plays Dean, a husband and father desperately trying to hold onto is family after his marriage has almost completely fallen apart. Michelle Williams plays his wife Cindy, who has gradually fallen out of love but stays in the unhappy marriage for the sake of their daughter.

The story of their lives are shown as a collection of flashbacks. As they argue about some topic we are taken back to a point in their lives where they were happy. We see them as strangers meeting for the first time, and then as they go on their first date. We see them fall into love the way young people do when they feel they have their whole lives ahead of them. Then we come back to the present day to see that nothing is like it used to be. This is a jolting juxtaposition.

Blue Valentine is a movie about the idea of love, and how love that seems so strong at the beginning of a relationship can slip away as infatuation and lust fade. This is not an easy movie to watch, but it is a great one.

Watch Burlesque Description

Cher’s name is above Aguilera’s in all the promotional material for this film. But make no mistake, it is Aguilera who carries this movie. And as a rookie actress she has nothing to be ashamed of.

Christina Aguilera plays Ali, a nice and bit naïve young country girl from Iowa. Desperate to escape her boring and dead-end life, she goes to Los Angeles to become a star.

Cher plays Tess, the divorced owner of a struggling dance club called Burlesque. Tess was a dancer herself in her younger days, but now way past her prime she acts as a tutor to many of the young dancers in her club. Due to weak attendance her club is in dire straights financially and not far from closing.

Tess and the club’s fortunes change when Ali arrives by chance. Given an audition for a job at the club she blows away all the other dancers. And she can sing too.

Ali is hired as a singer/dancer is an immediate hit. Tess feels a connection to this young girl and acts as her mentor, trying to protect her from all the shady men trying to take advantage of her.

Aguilera’s voice is in fine form here, and in fact she sings just about every number. She can certainly dance, and she shows a real talent for acting too. Cher sings just two numbers but shines as the former dancer trying to hold onto her club by using the new kid in town.

Burlesque is a fun movie.

Watch Tangled Description

Disney’s Tangled is an instant classic. No debate. Finally, they have again made a family movie that can stand alongside their 1990s classics (The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, (Tarzan).

A sort of retelling of the original story, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) is stolen from her wealthy parents at a very young age by Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) and locked away in a tower. She does this because Rapunzel’s long hair is able to keep Gothel young. With each passing year Rapunzel wishes even more that she could escape and see all that the world has to offer.

One day shortly after Rapubzel turns 18, a very handsome robber named Flynn Ryder (Zachery Levi) breaks into the tower and discovers her by accident. After hearing her story Flynn agrees to get her out and away from the castle, which he does. What follows next is a series of fantastic adventures that these two get themselves into trying reclaim what they lost. Along the way they inevitably fall in love, just like in any other Walt Disney movie.

I dare you to try to take your eyes off the screen while the movie is running. The CGI (a Disney first?) is spectacular and looks as lifelike as any animated movie ever made. The attention to detail is incredible. If you look anywhere in the background you will see many smaller characters and events going on. And the music is just what you would expect from Disney.. simply great.

Tangled is a landmark movie from a studio that has once again found itself.

Watch The Next Three Days Description

Man was this fun! Russell Crowe plays John Brennan, an ordinary school teacher whose life is turned upside down when his wife is falsely accused, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder that she did not commit.

Russell Crowe is fantastic as the husband who goes from disbelief to fear to despair to outrage as his wife goes through the criminal court system after being wrongly accused of murder. When the process is over and his wife begins serving her life sentance, he has two choices … move on with his and his son’s life or break her the hell out of prison. He decides to spring her. And he doesn’t care who gets hurt.

We watch as Brennan, who supposedly had no previous knowledge of prison escape, slowly plans, selects and assembles everything he needs for the escape plot. Now the movie shows this process very cleverly in that we see all the individual parts, but we are kept in the dark as to how they will all fit together when the actual escape is executed.

When the long escape is finally executed, all the parts come together and the audience is blown away by the plan … or at least I and the people I was with were blown away. The escape actually makes sense. The only downside is that a major part of the plan is that everything must work flawlessly, which I don’t think would really happen in real life.

No matter, this movie is smart and very entertaining.

Watch The Switch Description

I had serious reservations about this movie. The only Jennifer Aniston movie I have ever liked was Office Space, and that had nothing to do with her. But The Switch has a great premise and a really great performance by Jason Bateman, who even though is second billed is really the star of the show.

Aniston plays Kassie, a woman approaching 40 who decides that she can no longer wait to find her prince charming to have a baby. So she tells Wally, her neurotic New York friend (Jason Bateman), over lunch that she is going to have a baby via artificial insemination. Wally is heartbroken since he secretly loves her but supports her just the same.

Later at Kassie’s “pregnancy” party Wally gets drunk and accidently destroys the donated sperm that she has in the bathroom. Horrified, he substitutes his own semen just before he blacks-out. Later when he awakens he remembers nothing that happened.

Kassie moves away to have her baby and then returns 7 years later to New York, bringing her 7 year old with her. When Wally meets the boy he is surprised just how much he looks and acts like himself. The others in the town make the same observation.

The Switch is a movie about a relationship, but not about a romantic relationship between the Aniston and Bateman characters. This is a father – son relationship movie. As Wally and the boy become closer he begins to remember what he did 7 years earlier. There are some very tender moments in this movie as Wally and the boy develop that Father and Son relationship. This is a winner all around.

Watch Scott Pilgrim vs the World Description

This is a crazy movie. Scott Pilgrim (fantastic Michael Cera) is a young twenty something aspiring rocker who meets and immediately falls for beautiful Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Ramona is an Amazon.com delivery girl with baggage, namely 7 angry ex-boyfriends.

Scott repeatedly attempts to win over the beautiful Ramona, and eventually does. But Ramona tells Scott that before she can give her heart to him he must first fight each of her ex-boyfriends. Oh yeah, and each fight is to the death!

What follows is one of the most original storylines in years. This task is constructed like a video game, with each fight representing a level in that game. As Scott fights the first ex boyfriend, he uses all sorts of jumping, twisting, turning kung fu moves to finally defeat the foe. The angry ex, after being defeated immediately dissolves into game tokens that fall onto the floor. Scott must pick up the tokens and use them in the next fight (level).

Just like levels in a video game, each angry ex boyfriend is tougher than the last, until finally Pilgrim comes face to face with the seventh one … by far the most dangerous.

Watch Step Up 3D Description

Step Up 3D is the third movie in this popular dance series, and it is the best so far. You don’t need to have watched the first two films to understand or appreciate this one, but if you have then you are rewarded by the references.

The plot is basically the same as all the other movies of this type … poor scrappy dancers from the wrong side of the tracks (the good guys) take on the rich, egotistical and classically trained dancers from the well-off neighborhood. The story ends with the two sides going hear-to-head in the National Dance competitions.

Cliché yes, but boring no. Forget the amateur acting and the paper thin plot. Anyone who comes to this movie is in it for the dance moves. Now that we have tv shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” that millions can watch every week, the makers of this movie had to make the dance routines spectacular just to keep up. And they have done exactly that with these choreographed gems.

When you think about it, it is impressive that these people can act at all. The technical difficulty of these dances means that the director had to look for exceptional dancers first. That they could also act would be a bonus.

If you love dancing, especially hip hop break dancing, then this movie is for you.
