Watch The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Description

What film, filled with fantasy, magic AND physics, mild horror, adventure, humour, great action and special effects? Why it’s Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice of course. Starring Nicolas Cage and hometown (Montreal/Canadian) boy Jay Baruchel.

“The Sorcercer’s Apprentice” made its Canadian debut on Thursday July 8th, as the opening film feature at the commencement of the 14th edition of the Montreal Fantasia Film Festival, hosted, as it has been for the past several years by Concordia University.

In one of the venue’s largest theaters, about 700 of us were treated to the screening of said film, in advance of its opening next Wednesday, July 14th.

And what a treat it was.

After the general Festival opening announcements, Jay Baruchel (who was in attendance) introduced the film to the happy hometown audience. Then we sat back and allowed the magic to unfold.

Without giving too much (or anything) away, I can safely say that The Sorcercer’s Apprentice was indeed an enjoyable film.

Nic Cage made good as the “just a bit” crazy master sorcerer Balthazar Blake, on the quest to find the one who could be the next to acquire Merlin’s magic and defeat the evil Morgana.

And Baruchel proved to be well cast as the nerdy, endearing, reluctant hero / apprentice.

With a nice, balanced blend of action, adventure and pretty cool special effects. The film takes the viewer on a fun ride, reminiscent of classic Disney fun family fare. And it’d also no doubt leave you laughing out loud at some unexpected moments in dialogue.

If you enjoyed The National Treasure movies, then you will certainly enjoy The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Don’t judge this on the 8/10, this movie is FANTASTIC. I watched it expecting the mega-cheese that this movie is.

That’s right, it’s cheese all the way through, and I loved it.

Easily the best gang action movie I know of, it also ranks up there as one of the best thrillers I have ever seen. The movie is one big chase, and you really do feel as if you are one of the Warriors with thousands upon thousands upon thousands of vicious street rivals wanting nothing more than to tear you apart (literally).

Featuring a very well cast group of no names (only James Remar was a stand out to me) and an awesome character base, this movie thrives upon it’s title roles. You are drawn in and become attached to them all, part of the films appeal.

Because I didn’t see this until just recently (I was born in the late 80’s, far after the film’s original release), the film is out-dated and together with it’s retro-techno-rocker soundtrack it is pure cheese.

But that’s the cult appeal of this flick. It’s a classic, under-appreciated gem that is well worth picking up.

It should at least prove to be a little bit of fun.

This past decade hasn’t been particularly kind to the Predator franchise. Keep in mind that this is coming from somebody who is the minority of people who actually enjoyed Predator 2 (despite the ridiculousness of having one of the mandible-faced freaks in Los Angeles in the first place), and feels that the series didn’t begin its downward slope until the wasted opportunity of a film known as Alien vs. Predator. Thankfully, however, this latest entry proves to be a return to form, focusing much more on the hunt, while also providing this universe with a surprising amount of depth.

My favorite aspect of Predators is how it deftly returns to the roots of the series, placing a much bigger emphasis on the aforementioned hunt. In a jungle. There’s just something naturally hostile about being in such an environment, as opposed to city streets, or…the caves of Antarctica? And the unfortunate individuals who are trapped on this Predator home world aren’t just standing around, waiting to be picked off like victims in a teen-slasher flick. No, these guys decide to fight back, and it becomes a ton of fun to watch! No, it’s not particularly difficult to guess who will and who won’t be ending this trip alive, but it’s just refreshing to see these victims retaliating for a change.

To touch briefly on the audio front, Alan Silvestri’s original theme, as well as the classic Predator battle cry, is still firmly intact here. These may not seem like much, but I was surprised by how much they added to the overall experience.

And speaking of returning elements, as you might’ve expected, this film pays homage to several moments from the original Predator, particularly in the third act, when the film simply goes nuts. They’re all very much appreciated, but there is one – specifically, a certain line taken out of the first film – that just isn’t the same as when it was delivered by Arnold.

Nitpicking aside, though, Predators breathes new life into this franchise, providing plenty of new elements that separates it from the pack, while maintaining what was so engaging about the first film. It’s a quick distraction, but an entertaining one all the same.

So, when I first saw this movie advertised, I thought ‘How lame and pointless’. But I was dragged to see it, and it got me by surprise. It was great! And actually very funny!

It’s about a guy named Mike, who could of had it all, but he left it for his girlfriend. Now Mike wishes he hadn’t, as he and his ex-wife are now on bad terms and are getting a divorce. However, when Mike tells a mysterious school janitor how he wishes to be 17 again to change his life, he just gets it! So Mike is now 17 again, and is finding out more about his kids, and even getting more closer to them…and his ex-wife.

The movie had a lot of comedy, sweet moments, and Zac Effron isn’t cheesy in this, apart from the beginning scene. But that’s one scene, you’ll live with that! It’s enjoyable and I would certainly recommend it!

So, to clear things up, 17 Again is a fun teen comedy that is a lot better than you think! I gave it 9/10 for it’s excellence!

2012 is cynical, evil, and ironically hilarious. from the first moment that you see the destruction happening, you realize that its an unintentional punchline. i was rolling around laughing in my seat. people are dying and yet the director makes their deaths into some sort of joke. certain people die over dramatically. others die horribly cynically. it really just depends on what color they are! its kind of like the director is saying, “your screen time is OVER, whitey!” and then killing them off in some sadistically playful manner.

the plot is mediocre. the acting is mediocre. the premise of the film would work if it wasn’t presented in such an absolutely unrealistic manner. how many times can a plane take off from an airfield with the tarmac dissolving beneath it? how many times can a vehicle full of the main cast of characters dodge falling buildings or chunks of flying lava? finally, the treatment of religion in this film was just atrocious. people who chose to pray were viewed as foolish and then crushed by debris mercilessly… oh, i mean only the white Christians. the director wouldn’t show the Muslim relics crumbling to bits and crushing those kneeling in prayer around them. the director seemed to take particular joy in destroying the statue of Christ in Rio- it was all slow motion and over the top (which is saying something in this film).

if you can get past the racism, anti-religious imagery, and just plain ridiculousness of it all, there is some comedy in this film. its worth seeing if only to laugh at the stupidity. there are some really hilarious one liners which i wont spoil for you.
