The Hurt Locker effectively shows the viciousness and randomness of sudden death in war, and how such death effects not only family back home but also the soldiers on the front lines. You just can’t get the same emotional impact watching the news clips on tv. Patrolling cities where every person young and old is a potential foe, and where every item on the ground is a potential explosive, the members of the bomb squad are forced to see the war and life differently than most others. When one of their own dies there is a ripple effect that goes not only through the surviving team members but also people they later come in contact with.
What is surprising about the film is that you can’t tell the political leanings of the people who made it. Whether the creators are pro war or anti war makes no difference. The purpose of the movie is to tell how life works on the bomb squad when you are on the front line. And this movie does that very very well.
