Watch It’s Kind of a Funny Story Description
Its kind of a funny story tells the story of 15 year old Craig (played by Keir Gilchrist) who is experiencing such heavy stress and suicidal thoughts that he checks himself into a mental hospital for help. When the children’s wing of the hospital is not available he is placed with the adults. It is his interaction with these troubled adults and an eccentric doctor that make up the bulk of this movie.
As I watched this movie I could not help but think of two classic mental hospital films. The first is that all-time classic One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. In that movie Jack Nicholson tried to get the other inmates to rebel against the overbearing Nurse in charge. That movie was about the rights of the individual over an oppressive society.
The second movie was the Dream Team, which was a comedy about challenged people being able to live among everyone else.
This mental hospital movie focuses on the problem of teenage depression and the problem of suicide as an alternative. The movie is a mix of drama and comedy, but make no mistake that the message here is very serious.
Not a bad movie at all.
