Cher’s name is above Aguilera’s in all the promotional material for this film. But make no mistake, it is Aguilera who carries this movie. And as a rookie actress she has nothing to be ashamed of.
Christina Aguilera plays Ali, a nice and bit naïve young country girl from Iowa. Desperate to escape her boring and dead-end life, she goes to Los Angeles to become a star.
Cher plays Tess, the divorced owner of a struggling dance club called Burlesque. Tess was a dancer herself in her younger days, but now way past her prime she acts as a tutor to many of the young dancers in her club. Due to weak attendance her club is in dire straights financially and not far from closing.
Tess and the club’s fortunes change when Ali arrives by chance. Given an audition for a job at the club she blows away all the other dancers. And she can sing too.
Ali is hired as a singer/dancer is an immediate hit. Tess feels a connection to this young girl and acts as her mentor, trying to protect her from all the shady men trying to take advantage of her.
Aguilera’s voice is in fine form here, and in fact she sings just about every number. She can certainly dance, and she shows a real talent for acting too. Cher sings just two numbers but shines as the former dancer trying to hold onto her club by using the new kid in town.
Burlesque is a fun movie.
