Watch The Kings Speech Description
The King’s Speech, despite it’s title, is not really about royalty and the crown. It is a human story about class distinction, personal relationships and the difficulty some people have in trusting others.
George VI has just been handed the English throne after his brother abdicates. War is spreading around the world and England is expected to jump in. The people are looking to the new king to take charge and alleviate their fears concerning an approaching German domination.
King George, a lifelong stutterer, make a disastrous first speech in an attempt to calm his countrymen. Barely understandable, the king’s speech does not put his people at ease.
The king’s wife brings in a speech therapist to help George on his stammering. The balance of the movie deals with the relationship between the King and his new speech therapist Lionel Logue, played brilliantly by Geoffrey Rush.
King George at first dismisses Logue, thinking this commoner is beneath him. But, slowly, after many sessions, a mutual respect and even friendship begins to develop between the two men. The dialog is quick and smart, and it is a marvel to watch these two men act off of each other.
This is what movie making should be about. Not all special effects, but good character development. Fantastic.
