More than 25 years after the first one (featuring Johnny Depp), Freddy Krueger has returned to torment and torture a new generation of stupid teenagers and young adults.
In that version Robert Englund played Freddie, and it shot him to superstardom. This time Jackie Earle Haley takes over the role, and he’s great. The gore in this film is about
a gazillion times more abundant and realistic than 25 years ago. Some of the slaughtering is down right sickening. And some of the pretty lady victims are gorgeous, especially when
they are scared to death and about to be butchered. Fantastic!
Robert Englund will forever be “Freddie” to the many millions of fans who grew up watching his Nightmare films in the 1980s. He was dangerous yet funny in a mocking sort of way. And he knew how to deliver a one-liner. The only problem with the series in that era was that each new sequel that they put out got more ridiculous then the last. They trended more toward showcasing Freddie’s smart-aleck quips than the story. As a result the series finally burned itself out when nobody really cared anymore.
With this movie things are different. We have a very good actor playing Freddie in Jackie Earle Hayley. Hayley has done a lot of acting and has even been nominated for an Academy Award (Little Children). His take on the iconic killer is very different than Englund’s. In this film Freddie is not funny, he is a killing machine with a thirst for blood and inflicting agony on his victims. And there are many victims in this movie.
The entire tone of the Nightmare is miles away from the first chapters. The movie is dark and the suspense quotient it very high. The filmmakers have done a good job in not letting the audience know when Freddie is going to re-emerge, making the eventual shock all the more intense.
A word of warning though … the attacks and mutilations are extremely graphic and will no doubt freak some people out. This is NOT a movie that you can take kids to see.
