Matt Damon plays David Norris, a candidate for the New York US Senate seat. He is a workaholic whose has been targeting this position for years.

When Norris steps into a men’s bathroom to do some last minute rehearsals for an important speech he is about to give, he is surprised by a beautiful woman who steps out of one of the bathroom stalls. Played by the radiant Emily Blunt, the woman emerging from the stall is named Elise. As the two begin to chat an instant attraction become apparent. They both eventually leave to continue on their way.

Some days later they meet again by accident on a bus. He learns that Elise is a professional ballarina who works in New York. They completely fall for each other and find the nearest hotel to begin their relationship.

The next day Norris is approached by several “Men in Black” types all whom are wearing the same type hat. The leader of this mysterious group is called Mr Richardson (played by Mad Men star John Slattery) and tells Norris that they are the people who make sure things go according to plan. Richardson continues to say that Norris and Elise are not meant to be together, and that they must stop their relationship immediately or the “Adjustment Bureau” will stop it for them.

The remainder of the movie deals with Norris trying to avoid the Adjustment Bureau without giving up his new love Elise. Along the way he discovers that not everything is as it appears, and that choices he has made during his lifetime may not have been real choices at all.

This is a superior mystery sure to have audiences thinking about the nature of reality and free will.
