Hereafter asks questions about life, death and the afterlife. Specifically, how the prospect of death affects how we go about our lives. The movie explores this by following the lives of three people, all whom have been affected in some way by death.
The first is a French TV journalist who is suddenly caught in a devastating Tsunami. She is killed in the storm but brought back to life through the efforts of bystanders. She is since haunted by her memories of being dead and the afterlife, and as a consequence authors books and travels the world trying to make sense of it.
The second person is a schoolboy whose twin brother is killed in an accident while walking to the corner to pick up a prescription for their drug addicted mother. This leads the mother to put herself in rehab, and her surviving son gets sent away to live with relatives. He is haunted by the memory of his dead twin.
The third person (Matt Damon) is an American who has visions of death every time he brushes by someone. He has no control over it and it absorbs his life. To make things worse his brother has talked him into making money of off his abilities.
Though not knowing each other, different circumstances bring all three people to London on the same day for a surprising and very emotional event.
