Watch Dinner for Schmucks Description
The premise of this movie is very politically incorrect. The boss at a well known equity firm in Beverly Hills is to hold a small dinner party at his mansion. Several employees are invited along with their wives or significant others. Each employee is also to bring along an extra guest … the “schmuck”. This person is to be the most inept, dumbest and socially handicapped person that employee can find. Whichever employee arrives with the biggest “schmuck” (decided by the boss) wins the “game” and supposedly a promotion.
Tim (played by Paul Rudd) is one of the employees chosen to attend this latest dinner party. Tim is a junior analyst at the firm and is desperate to move up the corporate ladder to impress his girlfriend Julie (Stephanie Szostak). Though disgusted at what the party is all about, he still accepts the invitation in the hopes of bettering his career.
Shortly after accepting the dinner offer fate drops Barry Speck (Steve Carell) in Tim’s lap when Tim accidently almost runs him down. After Tim notices that Barry has bad hair, bad teeth and bad social skills he asks him to the dinner party. Barry accepts.
The rest of the movie isn’t really about the actual dinner (that happens at the end of the movie) but rather about the time leading up to the dinner. Barry is so happy to have found a friend (in his eyes) that he practically stalks Tim and basically makes his life a living hell.
The movie concludes on an emotional note as the actual dinner takes place.
