If there is one thing that you will come away with after watching this movie, it is that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is possibly the biggest jerk on the face of the earth.
Apparently one of Zuckerberg’s ex girlfriends was the catalyst for what would eventually become Facebook. After being dumped by her while attending college, Mark decides the best revenge is to create a “who is hotter” website using the college servers. Putting up pictures of coeds side by side on a web page and having visitors vote on which one is “hotter”, Zuckerberg’s revenge was a massive hit. So many college students visited the website that the traffic brought down the sever.
From this website came the idea for Facebook, an online community where people could meet. Working with other students, Zuckerberg creates Facebook from his college dorm. But then things start to get interesting. He is able to swipe the website away from all those that helped him and claim it for himself. This causes all his former partners to sue him.
The story is told using an effective narration technique. We see Zuckerberg sitting in a lawyer’s office giving a deposition. When a lawyer for one of his former partners asks him a question, the movie flashes back to the actual events as Zuckerberg describes them. Each time a different lawyer asks Mark a followup question, we see the events unfold on screen. Very effective.
Using this storytelling technique, the makers of this film were able to take a tale about an unlikeable computer geek and and make it interesting and entertaining. This is one of the better movies of 2010.
