Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) is one of those iconic characters that help define a generation of people. In Gekko’s case, he was the epitome of the 1980s “Greed is Good” era where everybody was out to make a ton of money and nobody cared who got hurt. This was the time of junk bond kings and day traders.
In Wall Street 2 Money Never Sleeps Gekko is back. It’s been 7 years since he emerged from his 10 year prison sentence for insider trading, and the world is a different place. Mostly it is more greedy and even more reckless than back in Gordon’s day.
Though he lost all of his money and power, he is happy to live the life of a popular author who writes books on the impending doom of the financial market, but regretful of the daughter who is so ashamed that she wants nothing to do with him.
Then one day he meets a young financial trader named Jake Moore (Shia LeBeouf) who gives Gekko the chance to reconcile with his daughter, destroy an old competitor and at the same time get back into the game.
Wall Street 2 is a very entertaining movie that will give the viewer insight into how the whole economic meltdown of the late 2000s occurred. It will also reward people who have seen the original movie with references and updates to characters from 20 years ago.
